Follow Friday – Oxbow Hay Company

Tigger in Oxbow Hay Bin

Now this is getting into your food. Tigger is in a bin full of Oxbow hay.

Both Tigger and Shadow have been on Oxbow Hay Company products since they were babies.  These products were recommended by the first vet we took Tigger to and we have used them ever since.  For a number of years we had to order straight from Oxbow.

A lot has changed in 10 years.  They discontinued their own online store as they became available from a number of sellers online as well as more local vets and retail stores.  Here is their Find Products page.

What we noticed right away when we would get shipments of their products is how wonderful the box smelled when you opened it up.  It was like opening a walk in sunny field.  The hays look good, nice colors and texture.  I would be interested if I was a bunny.

There is variety to choose from which is a good thing since the bunnies do have preferences about the hay.   As babies, they were on the alfalfa hay and pellets and when they reached adult weight, we switched them over to the less fattening timothy based pellets and hay.  We tried the Bunny Brome, Meadow Grass and Oat hays.  Our bunnies voted paws down on the Bunny Brome and Meadow Grass, but like the Oat hay for variety with their Timothy hay.

We get the Oxbow Papaya tablets.  There are mixed reviews whether that helps rabbit digestion or not.  Ours like the taste as a treat, so they get a serving a day.

Oxbow also has a Critical Care Formula that is available through vets.  This is a formula that is mixed with water to force feed to rabbits who have stopped eating on their own, usually due to stasis.  Being able to get something like this from the vet can really help to nurse a rabbit through a crisis.  We used this when Tigger experienced stasis last summer.

This is a company who has helped us to feed our rabbits well and keep them nutritionally healthy for 10 years.  We would recommend them to others. If you aren’t familiar with the company they have foods for lots of small animals: guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, hamsters / gerbils / mice and reptiles.

Just as so many on Twitter suggest others on Follow Friday, here in the blog on Fridays, I intend to share things I would recommend to others.  Sometimes it will be things for or about bunnies or lovely rabbit themed items and art.  Other times, I will share non bunny things.  After all the rabbits do hop off to their own pursuits too.

Later today I have a rabbit video to share.

For my second Follow Friday post today, I have an Etsy find, jewelry artist Bonnie of Bellina Creations.  I have really just started to get to know her as the captain of the Etsy team, Lean on Me.  I can see already I am going to enjoy the very positive atmosphere she has created in the team threads and the many friendly people who have been drawn to the team.

This is a find, she just opened her shop less than six months ago.  Reading her profile I see she is one of the many who have become unemployed in this economy.  In her own words she is “taking a leap of faith and finding a different road”.

You will find lovely jewelry in her shop that is beautifully photographed.  I picked three favorite pieces to showcase here.   She currently has over 120 handcrafted jewelry items.

I love what she shares about her sea glass:

But sea glass has a little piece of my heart. The reason behind this is that I put so much of myself into it. Each piece is found by me and can take days sometimes weeks to find a jewelry quality piece. Seeing that little shining gem lying amongst the rocks and sand is like finding a treasure!

I think there are many treasures waiting in her shop, so check her out: http://BellinaCreations.etsy.com.

Follow Friday – The Bad Bunny List

Hairy Beast - Bad Bunny
Using the Twitter idea of Follow Friday, I am going to share two things today that I love and recommend.

Here is the intro provided on the site for my first,
The Bad Bunny List:

The Bad Bunny List (241 kB, 24 pages) is a list of phrases rabbit ownees should get their naughty pets to write on a blackboard a la Bart Simpson. If you could get them to write…

I found this list just after we brought Tigger home 10 years ago in mid May.  I was searching online for help in dealing with our new baby bunny’s destructive tendencies and her ability to manage to get everywhere we were trying to keep her out of, off of, or away from.

This list had me in tears laughing.  I think the humor of dealing with a house rabbit can be greatly appreciated by all animal lovers.  However, if you want to check out their other bad pet lists, here is the home page link: http://www.badpets.net/BadPets/index.html

As a brand new rabbit parent after a long period without the thump of bunny feet around the house, the list was instructive.  Tigger was already showing herself to be over the top with her desire to get into things and way beyond my experience to keep up mentally with what she might try next.  I needed serious help in bunnyproofing to keep her safe and maintain my sanity dealing with an animal who seemed to have a suicidal streak.

Reading this list, I would laugh and then look at Tigger and think, “You just might try that and I better find a way to deal with it!”  The Bad Bunny list provided me with so much information on things I could not have imagined a rabbit might try. I was much better prepared to deal with rascally rabbittude rabbits after reading the list.

Later today, I will share an artist I like to follow.
