International Rabbit Day 2014 Is Coming!

International Rabbit Day 2014

I first learned about International Rabbit Day a few years ago.  Someone sent me a link to the website Holiday Insights with information about how the day started and the intent to promote the well-being of rabbits.  It is usually set for the Fourth Saturday or Sunday in September. Holiday Insights has the date listed for Saturday this year which would be the 27th.

I see that House Rabbit Society is planning on Sunday the 28th for observing International Rabbit Day. I say why not make it an International Rabbit Weekend and focus some attention on our big eared friends for both days.

Here is one suggestion for observing the day/s:  “Celebrate this special day with your pet rabbit. Learn a little more about him and how to properly care for his needs. If you don’t have a pet, maybe today is the day to get a pet rabbit! ”  Visit the Holiday Insights page for more information on the meaning and origin of International Rabbit Day.

Imaginary Worlds – Atlanta Botanical Garden

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has had a wonderful exhibit going on over the summer that will continue through October called Imaginary Worlds. I’m sharing the rabbit and unicorn sculptures here and will try to upload other photos I took later to either Pinterest or Flickr. I’ve finally begun to set up the account on Flickr and need to begin loading some images there. I’ve had the account there for some time, but forgot about it and forgot how to get access to it. Oh well, time to see about putting it to use now.

The pictures of the bunnies came out the best the day we were at the gardens, because I was able to shoot the images mostly at them without much of the sky. It was a weird lighting day when we were there, one moment overcast and the next bright sunshine. That can be tricky to get the light and color right and I am still learning and trying to get a good working relationship going with getting the best images from our two digital cameras. I’m hoping we can go back again this month and enjoy all the sculptures again. Although the bunnies look like topiary, the garden calls the exhibits sculptures. That is a better description of the scope and size of these exhibits. The rabbits are some of the smallest, others are 20 to 25 feet in size. The inside image here with the running rabbit shows an example of the foundation that the sculptures are built on.

Tomorrow a story about Tigger and Shadow and rabbit transit …

Friday Find

Crochet Bunny Rabbit

I just really loved this crocheted bunny rabbit when I saw it. How cute is it to have this white rabbit with curlers, robe and bunny slippers? It is so wonderful to see the creative things handmade artists come up with.  This bunny rabbit is from Barb’s Macrame on Zibbet.com a growing real handmade marketplace.

Tomorrow I will have something special to share about Leo.

Plan Ahead for International Rabbit Day 2012

International Rabbit Day 2012

Until last year, I didn’t know that anyone had designated a day to think about rabbits other than the obvious, Easter, which can be a very bad day for live rabbits who go to homes unprepared for their daily longterm care.  Then someone sent me a link to the website Holiday Insights with information about how the day started and the intent to promote the well-being of rabbits.  It is usually set for the Fourth Saturday in September which would be the 22nd this year.

Here is one suggestion for the day:  “Celebrate this special day with your pet rabbit. Learn a little more about him and how to properly care for his needs. If you don’t have a pet, maybe today is the day to get a pet rabbit! ”  Visit the Holiday Insights page for more information on the meaning and origin of International Rabbit Day.

The Etsy Rabbits team is planning to get the word out that the day exists by creating treasuries (Etsy member curated showcases) during September showcasing rabbit themes, items and the shops of Etsy Rabbits team members.  There are currently over 300 members of the team from countries around the world.  Most have shops on Etsy, but those who have buyer accounts on Etsy are welcome to join too. If you love to buy or create bunny rabbit themed items or items for rabbits, check out the team.  Members of the team love living rabbits and many members have one or more big eared friends at home.  Some members are actively involved with assisting rabbit rescue groups.  I will post some links to treasuries soon as more get going creating them and will be creating some treasuries myself.

On Friday, the first story of how we first met Portia bunny rabbit …

Video Share – Slurp, Slurp, Slurp

The link for the video in case it isn’t working here: http://youtu.be/pxqus86LTls.

The video is super cute and the rabbits very noisy.  We never tried watermelon with any of our rabbits.  I had no idea they would enjoy it so much.  I guess the one thing I would have to say here is a reminder that rabbits can develop a horrific sweet tooth.  They will really overdo it with sweets and get chubby or throw off the balance in their digestive tract.  To keep our rabbits in good shape, we kept (keep with Leo) fruits to special treats.

Leo has kept me quite busy today trying to keep my body parts away from him while cleaning out his cage and exercise pen area. His hormones are still going quite strong post neuter!  So I will have Shadow’s next story on Wednesday.

Would You Like to Take a Survey?

Rabbit Survey TakerI would like to ask a favor today. If you have just a minute or so, could you pop on over to the Etsy Rabbits team blog and take the poll on the left.  We are looking to increase readers for the blog and have just five items and want to know if those items are of interest to people who might read or follow the blog.  You can pick all the items, some of the items or none of  the items.

If you have the time and want to leave a longer comment, we would be happy to hear suggestions:

Team members of the Etsy Rabbits team have been working to let everyone on Etsy know about International Rabbit Day.  Since celebrations of the day have been listed for either the fourth Saturday / Sunday of September, the team has chosen to make the most of the different dates and we will celebrate on both the 24th and 25th, making it a rabbit day weekend.

Throughout the month of September and especially this coming weekend, team members have been creating wonderful treasuries. These feature the work of team members and many other Etsy shops.  They have been finding some fabulous handcrafted bunny rabbits and lovely vintage items too!

Check out the Etsy Rabbits team blog to see mini shots of the treasuries. You can click on those treasury minis to go to the full treasuries and view items of interest.  It is a wonderful time to shop and buy gifts for rabbit lovers, splurge on yourself, or even get something for your rabbit.  Many team members currently have house rabbits, some are involved in rabbit rescue work and designate a portion or all of sales to be donated to rescue groups.  There are shops that have items for rabbits and other pets too.

The blog will be updated with new treasuries as they are posted throughout the weekend, so check back for new finds!  If you like a treasury, you can favorite it or Tweet it or like it on Facebook to share with others.  Leaving comments, clicking on items in treasuries, and favoriting them can increase the visibility for them.  We would love to really up the visibility of rabbits this weekend by having them be really very visible on a huge website like Etsy that has millions of viewers worldwide.

Getting ready to bunny hop big time!
