International Rabbit Day 2014 Is Coming!

International Rabbit Day 2014

I first learned about International Rabbit Day a few years ago.  Someone sent me a link to the website Holiday Insights with information about how the day started and the intent to promote the well-being of rabbits.  It is usually set for the Fourth Saturday or Sunday in September. Holiday Insights has the date listed for Saturday this year which would be the 27th.

I see that House Rabbit Society is planning on Sunday the 28th for observing International Rabbit Day. I say why not make it an International Rabbit Weekend and focus some attention on our big eared friends for both days.

Here is one suggestion for observing the day/s:  “Celebrate this special day with your pet rabbit. Learn a little more about him and how to properly care for his needs. If you don’t have a pet, maybe today is the day to get a pet rabbit! ”  Visit the Holiday Insights page for more information on the meaning and origin of International Rabbit Day.

Happy Hop, It’s International Rabbit Day

SerenityThe Etsy Rabbits team has been hard at work today spreading the joy of International Rabbit Day by creating treasuries.  It is a lovely way to let people know about team shops who are rabbit lovers and many are involved in or support rabbit rescue work.  We have a dozen new treasuries from the last 24 hours posted on the International Rabbit Day 2012 events page.  There are so many beautiful things you can check out if you are looking for gifts for others or wanting to create your own wish list!

I hope everyone has been taking some time today to enjoy their own house rabbits or help others learn about what wonderful companions they make.  Last year was the first year we had heard about International Rabbit Day.  We spent that weekend a little more focused on enjoying Tigger and Shadow which was good since it turned out to be the last time we would have them with us to celebrate the day.  This year we are celebrating having little Leo for the first time and having the opportunity to get to know him better with hopefully many years of celebrations ahead of us.

Coming next week, more stories about living in a home divided into multiple rabbit encampments …

Pirabbits for International Rabbit Day

ARRGGGH! Talk Like a Pirate Day Meets International Rabbit DayArrgggh!  There are some things I can’t resist!   I saw on Etsy that today is Talk Like a Pirate Day.  I could not resist looking up all the great Pirabbit things I knew to be available and creating a showcase treasury for some of them.  I have added this treasury and three other new ones to our page for 2012 International Rabbit Day page.  Enjoy!

Coming tomorrow, another story about how Portia met Tigger and Shadow and still stayed with us as her furever home …

Additions to Our New Page for International Rabbit Day

Rabbits Ready for International Rabbit DayThe Etsy Rabbits team has been even harder at work creating some really lovely treasuries in honor of International Rabbit Day coming soon on Saturday, September 22nd.  The number of treasuries on our new Events section page for 2012 International Rabbit Day page has doubled from 12 to 24!  The treasury pictured on the left has items from just 16 members of the Etsy Rabbits team.  The team currently has more than 300 rabbit loving members in countries around the world.

You can click on individual treasury images and will be taken to the treasury on Etsy so you can view all the lovely items larger.  Once you are over on the Etsy treasuries, you will be able to click on item images to be taken to the listing pages for the items if you want more info or to buy.

This is where I fess up.  I had planned a story on Portia for last Thursday and it was one of those weeks where I needed someone following me around reminding me what day it was.  So I blew it and completely lost track of time the end of last week and went off the calendar schedule.  I will have another story about Portia this Thursday …

New Events Section with New Page for International Rabbit Day

Falling For Rabbits by RabbittudeThe Etsy Rabbits team has been hard at work creating some really lovely treasuries in honor of International Rabbit Day coming soon on Saturday, September 22nd.  I started out trying to Tweet them as they came along, but they got a bit ahead of me.  So to catch up and allow an easy place for people to follow, I created a new Event section here on Rabbittude with a 2012 International Rabbit Day page showing all the treasuries created so far to get the word out about the day.  You can click on individual treasury images and will be taken to the treasury on Etsy so you can view all the lovely items larger.  Once you are over on the Etsy treasuries, you will be able to click on item images to be taken to the listing pages for the items if you want more info or to buy.

Enjoy!  I will have another story about Portia on Thursday …

Plan Ahead for International Rabbit Day 2012

International Rabbit Day 2012

Until last year, I didn’t know that anyone had designated a day to think about rabbits other than the obvious, Easter, which can be a very bad day for live rabbits who go to homes unprepared for their daily longterm care.  Then someone sent me a link to the website Holiday Insights with information about how the day started and the intent to promote the well-being of rabbits.  It is usually set for the Fourth Saturday in September which would be the 22nd this year.

Here is one suggestion for the day:  “Celebrate this special day with your pet rabbit. Learn a little more about him and how to properly care for his needs. If you don’t have a pet, maybe today is the day to get a pet rabbit! ”  Visit the Holiday Insights page for more information on the meaning and origin of International Rabbit Day.

The Etsy Rabbits team is planning to get the word out that the day exists by creating treasuries (Etsy member curated showcases) during September showcasing rabbit themes, items and the shops of Etsy Rabbits team members.  There are currently over 300 members of the team from countries around the world.  Most have shops on Etsy, but those who have buyer accounts on Etsy are welcome to join too. If you love to buy or create bunny rabbit themed items or items for rabbits, check out the team.  Members of the team love living rabbits and many members have one or more big eared friends at home.  Some members are actively involved with assisting rabbit rescue groups.  I will post some links to treasuries soon as more get going creating them and will be creating some treasuries myself.

On Friday, the first story of how we first met Portia bunny rabbit …

Day One of International Rabbit Day Weekend – A Personal Celebration

Tigger and Shadow in the table leg thicket
I would call this photo, Tigger gives thanks, for all of us.  Over this past month when I have seen the postings for International Rabbit Day for either today or tomorrow, I was wondering if we would reach this weekend and still have two rabbits.  Shadow’s allergies moved into a more serious case of Snuffles right before Labor Day.  Since both bunnies tend to pass infections back and forth, both were started on the antibiotic Baytril.

After just a few days on Baytril, Tigger’s stomach problems returned and we needed to take her off the Baytril.  Shadow finished out his two weeks continuing to improve.  Starting earlier this week he has been a bouncier, happier, hungrier bunny than he has been in months.  Tigger however throughout this month has continued to have stomach issues.  She has been on again off again for appetite and on again off again for us giving her gas meds, pain meds and force feedings of Oxbow’s Critical Care and syringed water.

It has been very frustrating trying different combinations of hay, pellets and greens and having her at times even refuse her favorite treats of banana or dried fruits.  It has been exhausting and heartbreaking at times wondering if she was going to pull out of this.  She was overweight and we had been trying before this month to adjust her diet to help her to lose the excess weight.  Now in one month with her stomach issues, she has dropped about a pound.

There were some bad moments this week when she really seemed hungry, but lacking appetite and exhausted all at the same time.  Then we noticed a trend to her eating Kale and having a really bad spell.  So even though Tigger loves Kale, we eliminated it on Thursday.  Today, it is like we have a new and improved Tigger back.  She is bouncing around, getting into everything and eating as if to make up for a month-long starvation diet.

I just hope she doesn’t overdo it all!  However, it is a wonderful day and weekend to celebrate that we have two lovely companion rabbits who though elderly are still with us.
